San Lotano Maduro Robusto is a 5 inch by 52 ring cigar. After years of being the man behind many well-received cigars, AJ Fernandez, the Cuban exile, decided to do what many had anticipated, he finally released his own brand, San Lotano, nationally. Introduced in three different wrappers, San Lotano is made at A.J.'s Tabacalera Fernandez, the Nicaraguan factory responsible for Man O' War and many other cigars.
Fernandez is renowned for his tobacco knowledge and this plays well because he also has a fairly diverse group of tobaccos for each of the San Lotano blends. Add to this the recently introduced San Lotano Oval, a mixture of aged and proprietary tobaccos, and we have a completely different animal altogether. The San Lotano Maduro is the darkest of the three blends. For this blend, A.J. found a dark San Andrés (Mexico) wrapper to place over Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers. The other thing that sets the Maduro apart from the other two lines is that it is box-pressed, giving a rectangular shape to each of the five sizes.
The San Lotano Maduro starts with a mixture of cocoa and leather, before sweetness, creaminess, earth, cedar and pepper join the fray. This is another great Nicaraguan cigar with a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, joining the likes of the Oliva Serie V Maduro, giving that unique combination of sweet and pepper that the pair is synonymous for. Strength-wise the San Lotano Maduro is medium, body and flavor are medium-full and full respectively, a great overall profile. For those looking for something a bit lighter in strength than the San Lotano Habano, a bit fuller in body than the Connecticut, but the same great price and construction, the San Lotano Maduro delivers with an impressive flavor profile worthy of its 92 rating.
