Las Mareas by Crowned Heads Rebeldes cigars are a cigar that will doubtless be one of the most popular cigars in the glamorous Crowned Heads portfolio. The more modern of the two currently available sizes, Rebeldes, is a stout 5 1/2 x52 Robusto that smokes cool, while at the same time capturing the spicy essence of the corojo tobacco. Spanish for "The Tides," Las Mareas came about as a cigar inspired by Crowned Heads' president Jon Huber's appreciation of the beautiful ocean waves during a trip to Hawaii. Expertly crafted by Don Pepin and company at the massive My Father factory in Nicaragua, Las Mareas is the first Crowned Heads blend to be entirely comprised of tobacco grown by the Garcia family. Nicaraguan filler and binder tobaccos are capped off by an aged Nicaraguan Corojo '99 wrapper, similar to that used on some of Don Pepin's most memorable blends. Don't let the rustic appearance be misleading; Las Mareas is a super-premium cigar that will blow the minds of even the most discriminating aficionados.

There is no fancy packaging, no mahogany box, not even a proper cigar band on the vitolas. There is nothing but a simple blue ribbon at the foot of each rugged, veiny cigar. For anyone that's smoked true Cubans, this appearance of rustic construction will bring back some memories. The flavor profile probably will also. Las Mareas starts off tame, pleasantly slathering the palate with light cedar and nutty notes. No blasts of spice, no intense strength. It seems like something Don Pepin would have no part in blending. However, as the razor-sharp ash grows longer and the cigar progresses, Las Mareas begins to show its true colors, or more appropriately relating to the cigar's name, "the tide begins to roll in." About halfway through, the Las Mareas changes course completely. The cedar turns to rich tobacco, the nuttiness turns to white pepper, and all of Don Pepin's trademarks become apparent. A sweet caramel flavor seems to linger in the background, and a sweet floral note hits the nose on the finish. The level of complexity is absolutely mind-boggling.

The first half is medium, the last half is extreme, so that makes Las Mareas medium-full overall. Regardless of how you put it, Las Mareas is not a beginner cigar by any means. As most of the Crowned Heads blends, Las Mareas is aimed at a more experienced audience. This Rebeldes size pairs very nicely with scotch or bourbon and makes a delightful summer cigar. Fans of San Cristobal or Don Pepin Blue may find Las Mareas to be a welcomed addition to their humidor. Whether it's in your back yard, smoking lounge, or favorite cigar-friendly pub, it’s easy to ride the waves any day of the week with a Las Mareas Rebeldes cigar by Crowned Heads.
