Grabbing a La Flor Dominicana Oro Chisal cigar from its box is like presenting yourself with an award, a little something to celebrate your achievements. You may even feel like giving a little speech of recognition and thanks to producer Señor Litto Gomez, although your friends will probably look at you funny if you do so in public. Whether or not you say anything, feel free to congratulate yourself on a stick well chosen, a trophy for success. As usual with his sticks, the filler and binder tobaccos are all from Gomez's La Canela farms, but the blend beneath the Nicaraguan Habano wrapper was crafted specifically for this cigar, so even longtime LFD fans will find something new to explore.
The La Flor Dominicana Oro Chisel is a real beauty. It is crafted in the Chisel shape, like a pipe bit, which is exclusive to La Flor Dominicana, and makes it really easy to rest the cigar between your teeth. The wrapper is a medium brown with a nice reddish hue, moderate veins, and some nice oil to it. The band is close to a basic La Flor Dominicana except the middle is gold in color with LFD written in the center and Oro below it.
Released from its shiny golden tubo, the cigar is heavy, rugged, and beautifully textured with some noticeable veins and plenty of tooth. Thick floral-scented smoke bounds to the podium with a spicy kick while a burst of coffee touches tongue and lips when exhaled. As it settles in, the cigar produces plenty of wood and white pepper tastes that call out for pairing with a well-aged Scotch. There's even some earth and wheat toast to keep you paying attention as the straight burn takes a long, long time to finish what was started. You'll resist striking up the band as long as possible, but do lay down the nub before it burns you.
The wrapper of the La Flor Dominicana Oro Chisel has a scent which is woody and earthy, with a bit of coffee to it. The foot has notes of spice, earth, coffee, and wood. I use a straight cut to prepare the La Flor Dominicana Oro Chisel. All I do is clip off the tiniest bit of the chisel tip, and on the cold draw there are notes of coffee, cocoa wood, mild spice, and some nuttiness.
Full-bodied and amazingly potent, we're certain you'll be able to find a momentous occasion to honor with one of these gilded beauties.
