Altadis spent a lot of 2014 showing off new blends to classic brands, but one that slipped in under the radar was Juan Lopez. A classic brand that had been discontinued for a number of years, this new blend is nothing short of amazing. Re-blended with the new market in mind, Juan Lopez is now a Nicaraguan puro full of power and flavor. From the Nicaraguan Habano wrapper and binder to the Nicaraguan Filler, this cigar is great for anyone who loves medium-to-full bodied sticks.
The classic and ornate Juan Lopez band is back, but that is where the similarities to the past end. The toothy Habano wrapper gives notes of spice and pepper before the cigar is even lit. The first third of this cigar continues with the spice, but that tones down towards the back half and is replaced with an amazing cedar and sweetness. Each of these flavors play off each other perfectly.
Juan Lopez Seleccion No. 4 may have been a sleeper cigar when it was first reintroduced, but it is certainly getting noticed now. Cigar Aficionado magazine has named both the Seleccion no. 1 and the Seleccion no. 3 as two of the best values for 2014. The bold Nicaraguan flavors make this a perfect after dinner cigar to mix with a smooth and smoky single barrel bourbon.
