You know, K. Hansotia had something up his sleeve when he named the Gurkha Cellar Reserve Edicion Especial cigar. For all of the limited or unique or uber-expensive smokes he has released, it makes the inquisitive aficionado wonder what makes this particular stick so 'especial'. Lucky for us, the answer is easy to understand: the tobacco. Each stout figurado in the line is filled to the brim with some of the finest Dominican longleaf imaginable, including a hefty portion of 18-year-old tobacco that provides an extremely smooth experience despite the power which develops while the toothy Corojo wrapper slowly burns.
Resplendent in its detailed orange and gold band, the 5 inch by 58 ring gauge Gurkha Cellar Reserve Edicion Especial perfecto smells of leather and fresh hay, and tastes of cocoa and graham during the cold draw test. Easily lit, the tapered foot teases the palate with vanilla and baking spices, but the flavor really blossoms as the full width of the cigar's body is reached. The taste of freshly roasted black coffee fills the billowing smoke, followed closely by loamy earth and cedar. A lush berry-like sweetness rides on top of potent dark cocoa as the middle third is reached, with black pepper tempered by sweet cream during the cool burning final stages.
Ready for immediate enjoyment by experienced smokers, we wouldn't want to discourage more novice enthusiasts from grabbing a few of these delightful sticks. While certainly tilting to the heavier side in terms of strength, the well-aged tobacco does keep the Gurkha Cellar Reserve Edicion Especial from being bitter or harsh, so it makes for a treat with a stiff drink after a hearty meal for just about everyone.
