There are a good number of ‘anniversary’ cigars for you to choose from, all of them celebrating an important event in the brand’s history, but the Davidoff Aniversario Short Perfecto just might have them all beat. Created back in 1986, this monumental smoke survived the cigar boom without a scratch and continues to this day at the pinnacle of the cigar-making craft. Beginning with a blend of 4 year old Dominican tobaccos for filler and binder, only the most gifted of Davidoff’s rollers are tasked with layering them together before applying the gorgeous Connecticut wrapper hailing from the U.S.
Hay-like aromas waft from each caramel-colored 4 4/5 x 52 Short Perfecto like rays of sunshine on a warm spring day, and a subtle honey scent can be detected at the foot to complete the pastoral impression. Starting off mild to medium through an easy draw, the creamy smoke fills the senses with earth and a touch of black pepper. There is plenty of creaminess to be had the deeper into the stick you smoke, the solid ash dropping in two inch chunks. A little green grass and orange peel brightens up the final third of the smoke, with cedar and spice helping to bring the strength up to a steady medium-full.
What event is being honored by this esteemed line of smokes? That would be company founder Zino Davidoff’s 80th birthday. While the man himself is lo longer with us, the Davidoff Aniverario Short Perfecto survives as a tribute to his acumen in creating one of the premier cigar brands of the past, present, and future. As you sit with a whisky and one of these fine cigars, raise a toast to the man and know he is smiling down on your supreme enjoyment of his legacy.
